Salad Galore

Hey all, long time no blog…let’s get right into it…

My First Official Salad Beast

I love me some salad. And sometimes I’m in the mood for them more than other times, and this week seemed to be one of those times. Its also something that is so easy to throw together after a long, hard day. So earlier this week, when The Chef was working late and I was too tired to even think I decided to throw a salad together. Usually, I’ll just toss together the standard, tomatoes, cucumbers, meat and cheese, but this time was different…

It was pretty rad. I forgot how good canned tuna is!

New Things I’ve Tried This Week

Β

Wasn’t too crazy about these at first, but they grew on me. A nice, chocolatey dessert when you don’t want to down 100s of calories. These are only 60 calories a pop and you’re getting some fruit intake too πŸ™‚

The Chef wasn’t big on these, but I really dig ’em. They’re nice, bite size, crunchy, nutty bits with a slight cocoa flavor. I find them a bit addicting actually.

Not So Antipasti

The reason you haven’t been hearing from me lately is that we’ve been busy getting my mom’s condo fixed up before she moves down here. The past two weekends we’ve been cleaning, painting and other odds and ends. The Chef’s dad has come up to help us as well, which has been a huge help. Also, with these weekends have come takeout. Last night we took out from Westshore Pizza, which isn’t our fav place, but it’s just around the corner.

My plate

White pizza with ricotta and spinach…not terrible, but a bit salty. We also got the strombolli, which had TONS of mozzarella and some ham. I liked that better than the pizza. And for some green we got the antipasti salad, which…was…not really antipasti…unless you normally put things such as tuna and brocolli in antipasti? Yeah, I didn’t think so. Has anyone else ever heard of this? Cause we certainly haven’t.

A Few Notable Dinners (sorry no pics)

Tried the duck quesidillas at Red Mesa Cantina. Came with pineapple (I question it’s freshness) and a nice spicey sauce that had a smooth heat. Great flavor and perfect if you aren’t that hungry (I wasn’t obviously).

Went to Bella Brava for the second time since they moved into their new space. This time it was with The Chef, who is a harder critic. He got the Bolognese, which he wasn’t thrilled with…mostly because his is better πŸ™‚ I got this baked rigatoni dish with sausage, which sounded like perfect, cheesy comfort food. Little did I know it was going to come out encased in a GIANT pizza dough shield. I really wish I had taken a pic of this, but I wanted to deflate it as quick as possible so as not to draw attention. Yes, it was THAT bad. It was a pretty simple dish and I dug it.

These next few days are gonna fly as The Chef and I prepare for our trip to Portland! Can’t wait. Sorry to say, but it will probably be another long period in between blogs. Will try and update if I can…maybe with some quick photo posts πŸ™‚ Have a great week everyone!

Highlights of the Week

Hello friends! Long time no write…it’s been a busy, fun-filled week.

Highlights

Happy Hour at The Trunk

Monday night was another one of my friend’s fabulous meetups. We rounded up wine, cheese, crackers and fruit and headed to The Trunk shop on the 600 Block of Central Avenue in downtown St. Pete. The Trunk Stylists are Marianne and Aneesa, who are two of the Β sweetest girls you could meet. They do at home shopping parties, where they bring their clothes and jewelry to you and your friends. I did this last year at my place and it was so much fun! They were just starting out then, but now they have their own store and it looks fabulous! They were nice enough to open the store to us after hours to drink wine, eat cheese and SHOP.

Even the hangers in the dressing room are adorable!

I ended up with this super cute romper.

An example of how awesome these girls are…I would have never tried this on, but Aneesa encouraged me so I took it to the dressing room. And it actually fit nicely and looked good! Plus it’s a unique pattern. I’m not crazy about the tie belt so I’m on the hunt for a bigger woven belt to go with it. The best part? This is the first romper that actually looks good on me! I love rompers, but am always dissapointed on how they fit on my body. Either the shorts are too short or the waist part feels weird…this one is just right πŸ™‚

After The Trunk we headed to Acropolis for dinner. I’ve given Acropolis a few tries and am still dissapointed that there’s not a decent Greek restaurant between here and Tarpon Springs. They do make a good salad though and that’s what I usually get. The grilled chicken is great and I love the dolmades on top πŸ™‚

BellaBrava

Tuesday I finally got my butt over to Fit for Fashion…it had been forever. After an invigorating strength training class I met up with my friend for dinner. It was Tapas Tuesday at Cafe Alma and Ceviche. We tried Cafe Alma first, but they had no free seats at the bar (which is where the 2 for 1 drinks are). Then Ceviche, but the wait was 30 minutes (!!!). We finally decided on BellaBrava.

I hadn’t been to the new space yet. My first thought walking in was that it was loud and everything echoed. Luckily we got a good table in the main room and it wasn’t so bad.

A glass of wine was much needed.

They have 6 and 9 ounce options, which I’ve never seen before. Depending on the restaurant you go to you can get the same pour amount for a lesser price. But I do like how they seperate their wine list by tastes and flavors. I had the Terre Di Tufi, which was actually a bit too light for me, but it was crisp and refreshing.

My bud’s hummus plate. I got to have her olives πŸ™‚

I ordered the Polpettine pizza. It was really good, but I was also really hungry.

REALLY hungry.

The two other times I have tried BellaBrava (in their old space) were not pleasant experiences. The food was always eh and nothing exciting. Given that pizza though I’ll be back!

So tonight I request a salad from The Chef.

And this is what he presents me with…

Sauteed eggplant full of flavor, grilled chicken, greens and parmesan cheese.

He even makes bread fancy.

Love him πŸ™‚

Conversation Starter: The weekend is approaching! What are your weekend plans? I’m going to a fun event tomorrow hosted by the Morean Arts Center, getting drinks with friends and going to a blogger conference and wedding on Saturday. Can’t wait!

Salad Genius

Yesterday overnight oats made a comeback.

If you recall, last time I tried this popular breakfast I was not a fan. I tried it a second time with almond milk and it was better. But third times the charm! What’s the secret ingredient? Cinnamon! Cinnamon made a world of difference. Oh and if you’re wondering what that green juice is there that’s orange juice with a capful of my multi-vitamin, Alive. I can’t swallow big pills so I get my vitamins in liquid form πŸ™‚

Later that day at lunch I discovered that I have become a salad genius. I love how you can combine so many different items in a salad and magically they go together and taste amazing.

That would be leftover roasted chicken, sundried tomatoes and bleu cheese. Three simple ingredients, and I’m sure it’s been done before, but mmm it was yummy!

That night we had some friends over to help us polish off our pasta salad πŸ™‚ We paired it with blackened tilapia. We also had an awesome plate of gouda, sausage and crackers for an appetizer. The guy claimed he was getting a bit tired of our beloved Kashi crackers. Any suggestions for a new cracker to try?

Today was one of those days where I had in mind exactly what I wanted for lunch. There’s not much choice on the beach…plenty of places to order take out, but I like to just grab and go. Usually a publix sub will do when I don’t bring lunch for home, but today I wasn’t in the mood. I went into the store ready to pick up my fave frozen meal (though I don’t make a habit out of these at all), Kashi’s Mayan Harvest Bake. But, alas, they didn’t have it! So I settled for the Spicy Black Bean Enchilada.

It was a bit underwhelming. It got watery after it cooked and was definitely not filling enough. I only realized after I ate it that it was only 250 calories. Needless to say after a few hours I was tearing into my Luna bar.

Looking forward to a zumba class tonight! I haven’t been to one since my fave instructor moved out of state. But she’s visiting this week and teaching a class! Picking up a quick dinner afterwards and headed to a friends place for a bit.
