I’ve noticed yet another trend in the blog world…goal setting for the year ahead. I like the word “goal” a lot better than “resolution”…mostly because resolution has a stigma attached to it. It’s like as soon as you hear the word your already huffing at it and brushing it off. “Goal” sounds more grounded and more apt to stay put. And blogging about goals for the new year definitely seems like a good way to keep accountable.
In looking back at year 2011 I’ve realized I don’t have any particularly good memories. I know I had some good times, but the depression over the loss of my dad, my increased anxiety about…well, everything and stress over my mom’s big move and other life activities have all seemed to out weigh any good that happened.
At the same time I think I’ve figured out a lot about how I function and what I need to do to get my life to where I’d like it to be. A few months ago I had created a happy list, which consisted of me jotting down everything in life that makes me happy and how I can work those things into my everyday life and/or enhance their presence. I really ought to put that in a place where I can see it everyday.
So while my happy list is a more detailed outline for myself I do think it’d be nice to have some more general goals for myself in the coming year.
Goals for 2012
1. Find inner peace
This should really become an overall life goal, but I’m hoping to achieve it sooner rather than later.
2. Think local first
St. Pete is a wonderful community. Over the past few years the local movement has been growing and growing. I love being able to single handedly support local businesses knowing that’s making a difference in our economy. I was so proud to have bought all of my Christmas presents at local businesses this year. (All except one…I couldn’t find a frame at any local shops so I ended up at Pier 1.) I want to think local first for more than just gift, but also for clothing, necessities and food.
3. Become financially smart
I definitely need to get a better grip on my money. How I spend it, how I save it, etc. I promised myself that this would be the year that I open a savings account and figure out I want to save for retirement. And I’d really like to create a budget for our household.
4. Have a creative outlet
I miss writing. I miss art. I miss creating. This blog was created to help me all of that, but now that I have free time again I need to get the ball rolling!
5. Be involved
I love volunteering and need to keep up with it. I’d like to devote at least one day a week or every other week to volunteering. This goal is also me wanting to be more involved in the community. Beyond volunteering, I want to make a bigger impact and really help our community get to where it’s headed.
6. Get educated
I am ashamed to say that I do not always know what’s going on in the world. Maybe if the news was written in prose I would read it more, but it’s no excuse. I need to read beyond the food and entertainment sections.
There are also issues that I’ve always been interested in learning more about that I’d like to educate myself on. Kind of goes hand in hand with the “be involved” goal.
7. Get moving
This year I’ve gone periods where I’m a rockstar at working out and then periods where I can barely convince myself to do a sit up. My body needs some consistency and I need to make sure I’m doing some kind of exercise 3-5 days a week.
